The verb Ser

  • Ser is an irregular verb that doesn't follow a normal pattern of conjugation. It's very important to memorize all the forms of the verb.
SER - to be-
Yo soy
I am
Tú eres
You are (informal)
Él es
He is
Ella es
She is
Usted es
You are (formal)
Nosotros(-as) somos
We are
Vosotros (-as) sois
You are ( informal)
Ellos son
They are
Ellas son
They are
Ustedes son
They are

  • Ser + adjective: used to describe a person/thing.
    Paco es alto. Paco is tall.
    Paola y Marina son rubias. Paola and Marina are blond.
    La pared es de ladrillo. The wall is made of bricks.
    El coche es azul. The car is blue.

  • Ser is used to identify things and people:
    -¿Qué es eso?
    - Es una calculadora.     		-What is this?
    - It's a calculator
    -¿Quién es ella ?
    -Es Marta, mi mejor amiga.     		-Who is she?
    - She is Martha, my best friend.

  • To express origin: Ser + de + origin:
    Soy de los Estados Unidos. I'm from the United States.
    Ana es de España. Ana is from Spain.


  • To express possession: Ser + de
    La mochila es de Juan. The backpack is Juan's .
    El carrito es de madera. The little car is [made of] wood.

  • Ser is also used to express:
    time ¿Qué hora es?
    date Hoy es el 12 de marzo.
    days of week ¿Qué día es hoy? Hoy es lunes.
    where an event takes place El concierto es en la universidad.

  • Ser is used with professions:
    Jorge es piloto. Jorge is a pilot.
    Somos ingenieros. We are engineers
* Note that, unlike English, the indefinite article is omitted in Spanish, unless you use an adjective with the profession: Jorge es un excelente piloto. Go back to Lesson 12 for a review on indefinite article & adj.
