Usted (formal) Ustedes

  • When referring to someone in Spanish you must pay close attention if the situation is formal or informal.
    While in English the "you" could be used in both circunstances,formal or informal, in Spanish, you use
    (you)
    in a familiar situation,when you address a person that you would call by a first name, such as a relative, a friend or a child.
    Usted (you-sing.-formal)
    is the formal, singular form of you, used to address one person that is not familiar to you, or a person whom you should show respect. Ud. is the abbreviation of usted.
    Ustedes (you-pl.)
    is the plural form of or usted, mostly used in Hispanic countries. It's used to address two or more persons regardless of your relationship with them.
    Vosotros ( masc.)
    Vosotras(fem.)
    is the plural form of tú , mstly used in Spain.
    Nosotras or Ellas
    used for a group of females: Nosotras hablamos español. ( We- girls- speak Spanish)
    Ellas hablan español ( They- a group of girls- speak Spanish)
    Nosotros or Ellos
    used for a group of males:
    Nosotros trabajamos juntos. ( We- men- work together)
    Ellos trabajan juntos. ( They- boys/ men- work together)
    Ellos
    Whenever you have a male in the group, the masculine pronoun must be used:Jorge, Ana y Carolina (= Ellos)
