The verb ESTAR

  • Even though Estar ends in -ar, it doesn't quite follow the pattern for regular -ar verbs. Estar is an irregular verb and you will need to memorize each one of its forms.
ESTAR- to be-
Yo estoy I am
estás You are (informal)
Él está He is
Ella está She is
Usted está You are (formal)
Nosotros(-as) estamos We are
Vosotros (-as) estáis You are ( informal)
Ellos están They are (masc)
Ellas están They are (fem.)
Ustedes están You (all) are

  • Estar is used to express location:

El presidente está en Washington. The president is in Washington.
El libro está en mi mochila. The book is in my back pack.
La tienda está enfrente del supermercado. The store is in opposite the supermarket.
Ella está aquí. She is here.

  • Estar is used to express states of health:
    -¿Cómo estás?
    - Estoy bien, gracias .
    -How are you (feeling)?
    - I'm fine (well), thank you.

  • Estar + adjective: is used to express a temporary condition:
Ana está enferma. Ana is sick.
Las ventanas están abiertas. The windows are open.
Julio está muy gordo. Julio is very fat.

Estar + the gerund : to express the progressive tense:
The gerund form in Spanish -ndo is equivalent to the English form -ing :

Papá está trabajando. The backpack is Juan's .
Los niños están leyendo. The little car is [made of] wood.
Mis vecinos están viajando. My neighbors are traveling.

  • The difference between SER ( to be) and ESTAR ( to be) :
Paloma está enferma. Paloma is sick. ( she is sick temporarely, soon she will be ok)
Paloma es enferma. Paloma is sick. ( She is a sick person- not a temporary situation)
Fernando está nervioso. Fernando is nervous. (He is feeling nervous)
Fernando es nervioso. Fernando is nervous. ( He is a nervous person)
* Note that, unlike English, the indefinite article is omitted in Spanish, unless you use an adjective with the profession: Jorge es un excelente piloto. Go back to Lesson 12 for a review on indefinite article & adj.
