Present tense: regular -AR verbs

  • In Spanish all verbs have specific endings that agree with the subject. In this lesson you will learn verbs that belong to the first conjugation of the Spanish language; verbs that end in -ar.
Those verbs are in the infinitive form ( hablar, cantar, cocinar, nadar, etc.). In English a verb in the infinitive is composed of to + verb ( to sing, to speak, etc.). The chart below shows how the -ar verbs are conjugated in the present tense. You can apply this same pattern to all regular -ar verbs in Spanish.

HABLAR - to speak -
Yo hablo I speak
hablas You speak (informal)
Él habla He speaks
Ella habla She speaks
Usted habla You speak
Nosotros(-as) hablamos We speak
Vosotros (-as) habláis You speak ( you -pl- informal)
Ellos hablan They speak (masc)
Ellas hablan They speak (fem.)
Ustedes hablan You (all) speak

  • To conjugate regular -ar verbs you must drop the -ar and add the ending (-o, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an) to the stem of the verb.
The stem of the verb hablar is habl- ; the ending is -ar:
    - hablar > hablo ( for the first person singular "yo"), hablas (for the second person sing/informal "tú"), and so on.

  • The subject pronoun is usually omitted when there is only one pronoun in the sentence:
Hablo español. ( the "yo" is omitted because the ending of the verb "-o" obviously indicates the subject).
Hablamos francés. (again, the subject pronoun "nosotros" is not necessary in the sentence)

  • When the sentence doesn't clarify well who is talking, it's necessary to include the personal pronoun:
Habla español. ( who speaks Spanish?) - Ana habla español. -or- Carlos habla español.

  • Verbs in the present tense in Spanish may be translated three ways:

      I speak
    Hablo I do speak
      I am speaking

  • The negative form of verbs in Spanish are formed by placing the word no directly before the verb:

    Affirmative Negative
Pablo habla español Pablo no habla español.
Ana habla francés. Ana no habla francés.

  • Here are a some common -ar verbs in Spanish:

hablar to speak escuchar (música) to listen to (music)
cantar to sing mirar (la televisión) to watch ( tv)
estudiar to study necesitar to need
bailar to dance practicar to practice
nadar to swim trabajar to work
comprar to buy caminar to walk
cocinar to cook manejar to drive
llegar to arrive gastar to spend, waste
