Accent marks in Spanish

Written accent marks are used in Spanish to determine which syllable should be stressed. Here are the basic rules.

When a word ends with a vowel, n or s, the stressed syllable falls on the next-to-last syllable.

    WORD ENDING IN VOWEL
    WORD ENDING IN -N
    WORD ENDING IN -S
    Hola Esteban saludos
    cama hablen tenis
When a word ends in any other consonant, the stress falls on the last syllable:
    español
      profesor

When words do not follow these rules, a written accent mark must be placed over the stressed vowel.
    Méndez
      Jo

Written accents are also used in Spanish to distinguish one word from another:
    yes
    si if
    you (personal pronoun-2nd person sing.)
tu ( possessive pronoun- 2nd. person sing.) your
    hablé
    I spoke
    Hable (imperative) Speak!
I know (first person sing-verb saber)
se (pronoun) pronoun as in "levantarse"
está 3rd person verb estar- sing. esta (demostrative pronoun- fem.) This

Every exclamatory and interrogative words must have a written accent mark.
¿Cómo estás?
¡Qué lástima!

¡Qué estupendo!
